Mary Starmann-Harrison Appointed President and Chief Executive Officer, Hospital Sisters Health System

HSHS President and Chief Executive OfficerSPRINGFIELD, IL – Sister Jomary Trstensky, OSF, Chair of the Members of Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS), announces the appointment of Mary Starmann-Harrison as the new HSHS President and Chief Executive Officer. Mary will officially begin her new role in April.

Mary will bring to HSHS extensive leadership experience in Catholic health care. She is currently serving as Regional President and CEO of SSM Health Care of Wisconsin. SSM Health Care of Wisconsin operates St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, and St. Clare Hospital & Health Services in Baraboo, among other health care facilities in south central Wisconsin.

“Mary is a recognized leader with outstanding experience in Catholic health care,” said Sister Mary Ann Minor, OSF, chair of the HSHS Board of Directors. “I am confident that under her leadership, we will deepen our commitment to Catholic health care. With the latest technology and modern best practices, we will continue our legacy of providing quality care while respecting the individual dignity of each person,” Sister Mary Ann added.

Mary began her career in 1979 as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department and has served in health care management since 1980. She previously served as a CEO for Tenet Physician Services where she was responsible for the management of approximately 300 physician practices in the Western region of the United States. Prior to that, she held various leadership roles - including CEO - for St. Luke’s Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Over the past three decades Mary has successfully led numerous quality initiatives that have been recognized at the state and national level. She was part of the SSM Health Care team that received the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2002 – the first health care entity to receive this prestigious award. SSM Health Care of Wisconsin hospitals and health care facilities have also received multiple Wisconsin Forward Awards for quality during Mary’s tenure as CEO.

Mary is Catholic and is a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives. She and her husband Greg have two children, a son Greg (G.B.), and a daughter Stephanie.

Larry Schumacher will continue to serve as the Interim HSHS President and CEO until Mary joins HSHS and then he will resume his role as Chief Operating Officer for HSHS.
